Pedestrian Statistics Preliminary 2024

United States Statistic Commentary

Pedestrian deaths in the United States were at an all time 40 year high in 2021 and 2022. The following states are all seeing an increase in Pedestrian fatalities :

NV,AZ,NM,NE,KS,MO,IA,AR,IL,MI,IN,MS,AL,FL,NC,PA,NY.... As high as the numbers are now, we are in a decline. Still, one person is too many. 


We need to assure education and outreach programs are available widespread to the public.  Things like appropriate reflection gear and lighting, appropriate roadway changes and upkeep is just the beginning when it comes to keeping pedestrians seen and safe.


Final numbers from 2024

In 2024 final numbers released by GHSA show that 3,304 Pedestrians were killed by drivers across the United States. There were 353 more pedestrians killed in the first 6 months of 2024 than in the first 6 months of 2019 concluding that despite minor decline (by 88) we are far above the "Pre epidemic" numbers.


Arizona Pedestrian Statistics and Data

 In 2023 57 pedestrian fatalities and 86 injuries happened on Arizona highways. As a pedestrian, your body cannot survive a vehicle traveling at 55 to 65 MPH especially if you add in additional factors such as distracted driving, accelerated speed, etc.

If you break down on the highway and are not set up with services such as Roadside Assistance or AAA, please call 911 and ask for assistance. Stay inside your vehicle until help arrives.

2024 final numbers

In 2024 the final numbers for fatalities are as follows:
Motorcyclists: 219
Pedestrians: 261
Bicyclists: 44
Passengers: 219

Preliminary for 2025 (January - June)
Motorcyclists: 41
Pedestrians: 63
Bicyclists: 10
Passengers: 27
Unknown: 44

Arizona
Arizona is coming 2nd for bicycle fatalities according to a new study that came out in the beginning of 2025.


NOTE:  In 2024, there were approximately 1,166 cyclists killed on the road in the United States. Most preliminary data on cyclist fatalities for 2024 by state , has not yet been released.


Arizona comes in 8th for being the most dangerous state in the United States for young drivers. For more information on the study that provided this statistic, please see our sister site, Survivors Against Distracted Driving. 



Where does your state rank?

Alabama

In the first half of 2024, Alabama had 68 pedestrian deaths. This was a 1.8 % increase from the prior year and same window of time. 

Alaska

Anchorage shows an increase in early 2024 with 15 fatalities. This number is a drastic  increase in the last decade. While the NATIONAL trend in pedestrian deaths declined in the first half of 2024, Anchorage showed a 66.7% increase in pedestrian fatalities. Data and numbers are showing that there are 4 pedestrian deaths per population of 100,000. This data focuses purely on the largest city in Alaska, being Anchorage. 

Arkansas

According to studies done in 2024, central Arkansas saw a jump in Pedestrian deaths. 136 Pedestrian deaths were reported in 2024, where in the previous year the number sat at 62.

California

According to GSHA, California saw 439 Pedestrian deaths by drivers in 2024. This, is a decline for the state. California is seeing 1.1 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents. This is a 13% decrease from the previous year.

Colorado

In the first half of 2024, the state of Colorado saw and report 47 pedestrian deaths. This is a 24% DECREASE from 2023!

Connecticut

Connecticut is reporting 64 Pedestrian fatalities in the first half of 2024.  

Delaware

29 pedestrians died in Delaware in 2024, this is a slight increase from 2023.

Florida

Florida reports that there were 366 Pedestrian deaths in early 2024, this is a decrease from 2023.

Georgia

Georgia reports that 294 Pedestrians were killed in early 2024. The following statistics were made public:

84% happened during over night hours. 94% happened outside of a crosswalk. 21% happened due to motorists not yielding. 79% of these deaths were attributed to the pedestrian.

Hawaii

Hawaii reports that in early 2024, they saw 27 pedestrian accidents.

Idaho

Idaho reports a 14% decline in Pedestrian fatalities, but exact numbers have not yet been released.

Illinois

Illinois reports 219 pedestrian deaths in early 2024.

Indiana

Indiana reports 49 pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024. This is a 29% increase from previous years.

Iowa

Iowa reports 15 pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024. This is a slight increase from 2023.

Kansas

Kansas statistics are all over the place. While they have not release a total number of pedestrian deaths they report that in early 2024, 1704 crashes with fatalities were reported, 8 being pedestrians. However, statistics from Wichita report that there has been a 34% increase in pedestrian fatalities (9 pedestrians and 4 bicyclists) and Kansas city reports that 17 pedestrian deaths were reported strictly within Kansas city.  

Kentucky

The total bicyclists and pedestrian deaths reported in Kentucky were on the decline in the first half of 2024 with the reported number of combined fatalities being 107.

Louisiana

Data out of Louisiana shows that in the first half of 2024, there were 147 pedestrian deaths.


Louisiana is documented top most dangerous states for cyclists.

Maine

Maine did not have a pedestrian fatality on record until March of 2024. However in the first half of 2025, Maine has reported 6 Pedestrian deaths.

Maryland

In early 2024 there were approximately 2 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents.

Massachusetts

In the first half of 2024 data shows 78 pedestrian deaths with 37.2% being older adults.

Michigan

Reports are showing that in 2023 there were 183 pedestrian deaths, the highest in 10 years (Pre pandemic) the same report shows that data issued shares traffic deaths declined with no numbers release, yet stating that pedestrian fatalities remain above Pre Pandemic level. 

Minnesota

Early 2024 data reports that Minnesota has seen an increase with 56 pedestrian deaths.

Mississippi

Mississippi reports a high increase in pedestrian deaths. The state of Mississippi remains at the top of the most dangerous states for pedestrians. In early 2024, reports are showing that there was 1.94 pedestrian death per 100,000 resident. It is important to remember that we will be looking at the end 2025 before final numbers are out for the 2024 year. Please be sure to subscribe to Addi's Miracle! Additionally, Mississippi is listed as one of the top most dangerous states for cyclists. Some documentation shows that there have already been 17 cyclist deaths in 2025, but preliminary numbers for 2024 have not yet been released.

Missouri

Missouri is showing a record number of Pedestrian deaths in early 2024 with 148 pedestrians being struck and killed on Missouri roadways.

Montana

The number of Pedestrian deaths reported in early 2024, is 2. This is an amazing decline by 71% And the data shared from 2023!


Montana is documented as one of the top most dangerous states for cyclists. We are still waiting on preliminary data to be released.

Nebraska

Nebraska unfortunately is reporting a 170% increase from pedestrian deaths in 2023 with 10 pedestrian deaths reported in the first half of 2024.

Nevada

Nevada is showing an increase in pedestrian fatalities with 112 pedestrian fatalities reported in early 2024.

New Hampshire

Preliminary Data is showing that there is a decline in pedestrian deaths in 2024 from 2023. However, numbers of pedestrian deaths have not been reported / made public. Numbers as a whole coming from New Hampshire show that there were 135 deaths by the end of 2024 this includes pedestrian, motor vehicle etc. New Hampshire as a whole tends to run on the low side of Pedestrian deaths compared to other states in the U.S however their numbers are still documented as being higher than pre pandemic level.

New Jersey

New Jersey is showing an increase in Pedestrian deaths from 2023 to mid 2024 with 221 pedestrians being killed on the road. This is a 21% increase from previous years.

New Mexico

We unfortunately already know that New Mexico remains in the top 3 states for being the most deadly for pedestrians. Data is showing that in the first half of 2024 there were 2.30 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents per NM DOT.

New York

New York City saw a 27% increase in pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024. Data shows that there were 61 pedestrian deaths. Large vehicles and SUV's are reported as being a factor in these pedestrian deaths.

North Carolina

In the first half of 2024 there were 137 pedestrian deaths, which is a significant increase from the data shown in 2023 as well as previous years.

North Dakota

North Dakota has reached a 24 year low in Pedestrian Deaths. Data shows that in the first half of 2024 5 Pedestrian deaths were reported. 2023 data reports 10 pedestrian deaths.

Ohio

Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that Ohio is on a national decline in pedestrian deaths. Data still reports that in the first half of 2024 pedestrian deaths still remain higher than pre pandemic pedestrian deaths. Additionally data shows that since 2019 Ohio recorded 862 pedestrian deaths. Additionally, Ohio leads in the top 10 states for Rail accidents coming in at #39 and being the 10th highest with 17 deaths and 22 injuries, in 2024. 


Cleveland reports that they recorded 15 pedestrian or cyclist fatalities in the first half of 2024.


Ohio is documented as one of the top most dangerous states for cyclists. We are still waiting on preliminary data to be released.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the only state that as of current *Mid June 2025* Pedestrian fatalities have not been reported to the GHSA. While the numbers have not been reported it is known and has been reported that Oklahoma is looking at an incline with Pedestrian fatalities.

Oregon

Oregon saw a decrease in Pedestrian fatalities compared to the same time span in 2023. The first half of 2024 pedestrian fatalities in Oregon are reported to be 43. This is a 19% drop from 2023.

Pennsylvania

186 Pedestrian deaths were reported for the first half of 2024, across the state. This is a decline from 2023. Data shows that there were 3,145 pedestrians with injuries reported across the state in 2024. 

Rhode Island

Pedestrian fatality numbers for 2024 have not been released. However, data shows that as a whole, Rhode Island had 52 traffic related fatalities in early 2024.

South Carolina

South Carolina has not released official data on pedestrian deaths from 2024. However after combing through tables and graphs from 2017 - 2021 it shows 861 pedestrian fatalities through all counties were recorded in those years. In another category in the same article they broke it down to 172 pedestrian fatalities annually. Information pulled from NHTSA.GOV

South Dakota

In the first half of 2024, there were 3 reported pedestrian fatalities.

Tennessee

In early 2024 there are 63 pedestrian fatalities reported. This is a decline by 30% in 2023.

Texas

In 2024 there were 768 reported pedestrian fatalities reported. This is approximately a decrease of 5.19%  in 2023.

Utah

Utah data has 43 pedestrian deaths reported in early 2024. This accounts for 15% of the traffic related fatalities for the year.

Vermont

Vermont Pedestrian deaths are at a decline for the 2nd year in a row. There were 6 Pedestrian fatalities plus 2 bicyclist fatalities reported for 2024 

Virginia

Data shows that 126 pedestrian deaths were reported for 2024, with 25 of those being bicyclists.

Washington

A preliminary report from Washington Traffic Safety Commission reports that in 2024 there were 155 pedestrian fatalities. This is a decline from 2023 by 9.6% in 2023.

West Virginia

Comprehensive Data on Pedestrian deaths in 2024 are not yet available for WV.

Wisconsin

Comprehensive Data on Pedestrian deaths in 2024 are not yet available for WI.

Wyoming

WYDOT reports 5 pedestrian fatalities for early 2024. This is down from the 10 pedestrian fatalities reported in 2023. 


Wyoming is listed as one of the top most dangerous states for cyclists. We are still waiting on preliminary numbers for 2024 to be released.
